The founder and CEO of Shadow League Digital, Keith Clinkscales launched his unique sports news organization after he had served nearly seven years as a senior vice president at ESPN. Keith Clinkscales has received much recognition over the course of his career, including the Peabody Award and the Excellence in Journalism Award from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).
To combat the often negative portrayal of black men in the media, NABJ hosted its third annual national Black Male Media Project (BMMP) day on June 1, 2019, with simultaneous events held at 20 NABJ chapters across the country. BMMP aims to improve black male representation in the media by bringing communities together to discuss the need for diversity and accountability in local newsrooms.
Sarah Glover, NABJ President and creator of BMMP, said that the way black men are portrayed in the news influences social reactions, such as racial profiling and discrimination in employment and housing. NABJ asked its supporters to post positive images of black men to social media to raise awareness of the need for equity in reporting.
